America needs a workforce skilled in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), and a notable group of companies and organizations is uniting to ensure that the nation gets the message. This summer, June 27 – 29, thousands of education, policy and industry thought leaders will convene in Dallas, Texas, for STEM Solutions 2012, a groundbreaking leadership summit that will bring the best minds and best practices together on a national stage to open the conversation and develop solutions to the STEM skills shortage.

A Unique Voice Bridging Business and Policy to Shape the Competitiveness of the Workforce and Workplace

Corporate Voices for Working Families, a leading non-profit buisness membership organization, engages the business community in advancing postsecondary education completion and workforce readiness training through its Learn and Earn initiative. This initiative seeks to identify, promote and encourage innovative partnerships between employers and community colleges to help low-income young adults earn a living while continuing their education. This work is made possible by the generous support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and its Postsecondary Success Strategy.

Goodwill initiative to scale up projects

"They are familiar stories. A woman studying to be a nurse gets sidetracked to take care of her ill mother. A foreign-born doctor must start over on a degree because his credentials are not recognized here. A mother works to support her family but needs more flexible hours at her job to be with her children."

"These are the types of situations that partnerships between community colleges and Goodwill International Industries (GII) are targeting to ensure that these people don’t lose out on getting an education. Of the 158 Goodwill organizations around the country, more than half have some sort of partnership with a community college, according to Brad Turner-Little, director of workforce development at GII."
