STEM Learn and Earn
An increasing percentage of low-income young adults work while attending school, and most students work in jobs that are unrelated to their course of study. These students note that balancing work and school is the primary barrier to their success in higher education. At the same time, industry leaders report that they are unable to find qualified workers to fill highly skilled manufacturing jobs despite high unemployment rates. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, (STEM) Learn and Earn programs place students in jobs that are related to their field of study, providing them with the opportunity to earn money while learning more about their field. In so doing, these programs aim to bridge the gap between industry’s demand for highly skilled workers, and the supply of student labor.
