Purdue University's Course Signals Boosts Retention

Aimed at strengthening relationships between students/faculty, inspiring greater student engagement with material, and analyzing performance, Purdue University’s Course Signals uses data from the institution’s information systems to detect at-risk students. These students are then sent helpful interventions, such as email reminders or invitations for face-to-face meetings with instructors. The result? A recent study showed that students with two or more Course Signals classes tended to have a retention rate, from one year to the next, in the high 90s. Their corresponding cohort, with no exposure to Course Signals had retention rates from the low 60s to high 80s.
